Part of
Henry III's extension to the castle in the mid thirteenth century, the Devereux Tower stands in the north-west corner of the inner ward, providing solid defence on the City side. This was the part of the fortress most prone to attack. Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, fallen favourite of
Elizabeth I was imprisoned here for two weeks prior to his execution on Tower Green in 1601. He was the last to die on that spot and as a result the tower bears his name. The tower is now a Yeoman Warder residence.
