Middle Tower

The main entrance for Tower visitors today, the Middle Tower, as its name suggests, was positioned between two others - the Lion Tower (no longer visible) and the Byward Tower, as part of Edward I's new land entrance to the fortress. The slots for two portcullises can be seen inside the archway. The royal arms above the arch are those of George I, king when the tower was partly re-faced with Portland stone.
